SSHRC Insight Development Grant

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports research and training in the humanities and social sciences.

Submitting to SSHRC

The application must be prepared using the SSHRC Research Portal.

Applicants and Co-applicants must also completed the SSHRC version of the Canadian Common CV and append within the Research Portal.

UBC Okanagan applicants can make use of the Uniweb Portal to more easily create and manage their CCV.

Note that this is a different portal from the one used for other SSHRC programs.

  • UBC Okanagan Internal Deadlines are noon two complete business days prior to the sponsor deadline for SSHRC applications.
  • UBCO Internal RPIF deadline: January 30, 2024 at noon
  • NEW for 2024: Applicants must “submit” in the portal by the UBCO Internal Deadline
ORS cannot guarantee that applications submitted after this time will be forwarded to SSHRC.

The application must be prepared using the SSHRC Research Portal.

Note that the Insight Development Grant uses a different portal than other SSHRC programs.

Use the Research Project Information Form (RPIF) to obtain the required internal signatures:

  • UBC Applicant (Principal Investigator)
  • Department Head or Director of School or Institute
  • Dean or designate

Note that any internal UBC cash contributions included in your application budgeting should be detailed on the RPIF final page, including “worktag” or source account number.

Internal UBC Co-Applicants: electronic acceptance of Applicant’s invitation to participate in the application meets SSHRC signature requirements. However, the UBC-O researchers need relevant Department/Faculty to review and sign a co-applicant signature page when the co-applicant is from a different UBC Department/School. The UBC Okanagan Co-Applicant signature page can be found on the Forms page.

External Co-Applicants on UBC submissions: electronic acceptance of Applicant’s invitation to participate in the application meets SSHRC signature requirements.

Co-Applicants on a SSHRC application being initiated by a Principal Investigator at another institution need to submit a final copy the application, and RPIF, for review to ORS even though the submission is going forward from another institution.

Confirm with the final signatory on your RPIF (usually the Associate Dean, Research), if they will forward the RPIF via email on your behalf, or if you will receive the RPIF from them to send to ORS (ResearchOffice.UBCO@ubc.ca ).

In addition to the RPIF, Applicants must submit a digital copy of their full,  application to: ResearchOffice.UBCO@ubc.ca  by the UBCO Internal Deadline (see above).

Submit your full application online by UBCO’s internal deadline date at noon. To do this, you must complete and attach all the forms as described in the SSHRC Insight Development Grants web application instructions. If applicable, ensure that all co-applicants and collaborators have submitted their “Accept Invitation Form” and have included all relevant attachments. “Validate” all the sections of your application*

*Note that by keeping the application in a ‘Validated’ (but not yet submitted) state, you are able to work on the application (except for approved budget) during the ORS processing and signature procedure. If you have already submitted it in the web portal and need to make a change, you will need to have it returned to you by ORS and then re-submit.

The internal deadline is intended to ensure that all applications receive administrative review prior to institutional support / signature (by ORS). Please ensure you have collected required internal signatures on your Research Project Information Form prior to submitting to ORS.

If all requirements are met, ORS will forward your application in the Research Portal by SSHRC’s program deadline. ORS has read-only access to your application and cannot make changes. If changes are required to meet compliance with UBC and SSHRC policies, ORS will return it to you for changes.

Once ORS has approved and forwarded your application, the status on the SSHRC Research Portal will change from “Received by Administrator” to “Received by Agency.” Material or revisions received under separate cover (before or after the deadline date) will not be accepted by SSHRC.

For your information, the definition of each application status on the SSHRC on-line system is:

  • In Progress: application is being prepared
  • Verified/Validated: application or applicant page is complete and validated
  • Submitted: application is submitted to ORS by the applicant. ORS can view the application and the CVs, return it to the applicant or forward it to SSHRC.
  • Returned: application requires changes and is returned to the applicant by ORS. The applicant receives a system-generated e-mail. ORS can no longer view the application.
  • Forwarded: application is approved and forwarded to SSHRC by ORS
  • Received: application has been received by SSHRC and is ready for processing

Instructions for each module are available within the online application portal. For an overview of evaluation criteria and other information, visit http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/programs-programmes/insight_development_grants-subventions_de_developpement_savoir-eng.aspx
